Welcome to November and some more news!!!

Wendy Vaughn is recovering nicely from surgery and I'm sure she will be up and about real soon.... phone or email her and chat I'm sure she would love to talk and fill in her days with friends.

Miriam Dreher has been busy In October she performed at four different shows in Kansas City Missouri. Then she won International Platinum yodeler of the year again in Branson. In the last four years she has been the recipient of 18 music awards. These include four Canadian Awards and four International Awards for yodeler, three media personality, a very special prestigious award from the Government of Canada and others include favourite artist, favourite entertainer and childrens programs.  Way to go Miriam...November 19th she will be attending the Western Music Festival in New Mexico. Recently she received an email inviting her to Rotterdam the Netherlands for next August to perform and teach yodeling.
Access Tv are doing a profile on her life history and will be broadcast probably in January sometime... Watch for that...

(Access contacted me and I gave them lots of ideas for shows and looks like they are going to use some of them)

Yodelfest 09 is moving to a larger venue The Town and Country Center on 212 Jensen Drive Airdrie Ab. Unfortunatel;y this is the same day as the Alberta's Men and Women of Country Music  so you know where i will be... It used to be in April i believe but i guess they couldn't get the new venue for then...

Danielle Lowe won the youth division of the Country Vocal Spotlight Contest and then was chosen overall winner between the youth and open divisions.... Quite an accomplishment for someone so young... Way to go Danielle.

Dynasty Records and Spirit River Distribution have joined forces to combine their many years of experience to help artists get more markets for their CD's and to make more Artists product available to the consumer... Way to go Jeff and Melanie I love people who think outside the box. For more info go to www.spiritriver.com or www.dynastyrecords.com for more information.... Great place for independent artists to find information about how to get into new markets...

The Myrols will be playing November 23rd at the Millet Legion Doors open 2pm Call John Perry 780-387-5748 to book tickets.

Laurence Duperron long time Quarterhorse Breeder from the Drayton Valley area died on November 4th. He was the owner with his son Bert of Tripple D Quarter Horses. He was also a beloved Boxing coach for 30+ years and he was recently inducted into the Alberta Boxing Association Hall of Fame. He was very community minded and along with his wife Evalina the were tireless community supporters. He will be sadly missed by many across Alberta and Canada.

Welcome to Fall 2008

Maple Creek Gathering 2008

I asked Ol' Ugly to tell me about Maple Creek as i didn't get to go this year...darn!!

MAPLE cREEK WAS WONDERFUL THIS YEAR. the committee seemed much more upbeat this year and that set the tone for the whole weekend.  Even though they still need to address the sound problems in the arena as the echoes make it difficult to hear. Ol' Ugly said jokingly "I was off the stage ten minutes before my stories stopped reverberating around the room"  "This was the first time i was able to sit and listen to myself perform".... Many places that use arena's have this same problem.

The Elks Hall and the Curling Club are excellent venues though and they are always full to overflowing when the acts are on stage. They were especially full when Shirley Fields and Al Owcher performed there. These two performers are fabulous performers each in their own right, but together they bring back so many memories for the fans.

The fans in Maple Creek come from all over Sask and Ab. These are the warmest people i have ever met. Time after time i meet people who will sit and talk to us for a few minutes and tell us how much they enjoyed the show. I as well as many entertainers have made many friends at this event.

Maple Creek has a unique custom; They put on a supper for the entertainers at the Jasper Center on Friday evening. We can sit and talk and catch up on the news. The food is excellent and the company wonderful. Then on Saturday they have their main supper for anyone at the Armouries. That is even more fun as you get to meet the fans as well and just joke and laugh and have a great time.

Some of the entertainers who were there were Laura Hayes (beautiful voice) who sang a song called "The Storyteller" I love that song. Perry jacobson, Lloyd Dolen (who is releasing a new CD soon) Ben Beverage, The Moncrieffs, Buddy Gale, Dave Dance, DC Lund, Doris Bircham, Ann Lansdale, Mag Mawhinny, and many many more.

Ol' Ugly was nice and said he missed me being there but not half as much as i missed being there... You betcha Maple Creek is one of the gatherings on my list for next year. See ya there the Good Lord willing.

Anyone else who has news for my newsletter just email it to me PLEASE!  Thanks!

Where the heck did summer go??

Well the shows this summer all went well, Stavely was a hit and the new committee did an awesome job... I hear Eli Barsi did an awesome job as usual She sure is an Alberts/Sask treasure. Way to go Tex and crew.

Pincer Creek had a smaller turnout and the weather and gas prices may have played a part in that... but the line up was awesome and those who did go were royally entertained...

Stony Plain was a real success and cudo's go out to Jackson and the new executive for an awesome job. The Trade Show was reintroduced and we had 25 booths and 29 are already booked for 2009 so i hope they continue with it. The line up was spectular the crowd was very appreciative... The heat got to a few people but other than that it was a huge success. Everyone had a good time and the Tea House as well as the Old Church was busy with performers  as well as continual performances in the Pavilion.
Hopefully the Pavilion will be upgraded so we have better sound next year.... We can hope.

The Country Corn and Music Festival celebrated it's 10th Anniversary and the people came out in droves as did the performers.... Dick Damron was again a huge hit... a fellow by the name of Harry Welling was unreal with his powerful voice and his humor kept the crowd in stitches... Mr Dumont from Sask. donated a hand made violin to the Feed The Children Program (in schools) and i'm not sure but i think over $600  was raised... A lady was the winner but she had no need for it so she kindly gave it to Keith Kendrew from Rimbey who had been buying tickets all day hoping to win it as he is learning how to play... Way to go Keith... he said he will play a tune or two at next years gathering...
Rick and Sheryle started the show 10 years ago and Sheryle is continuing it and hopes it will get bigger and better in years to come... If a 140+ camper units is any indication i would say it is growing.... Congrat's Sheryle and crew.

Maple Creek is coming up the third weekend in September and I'm sure it will be a great success as usual. They have a great crew out there in Sask. I'm just sorry i can't go this year.

The ACPA show is the fourth weekend in Sept and will be a great show as well With members only on the lineup it will be a steller show. I was going to do the CD tables at Maple Creek and ACPA but life changes and i can't make it now but that's life.
They say this is next year country so we'll se what next year brings...

REMEMBER ANYONE ENTERING COUNTRY VOCAL SPOTLIGHT YOUR ENTRIES HAVE TO BE IN BY SEPT 12.

Go on the Northlands web site for details.

Closed Auditions are the 27th and 28th of September at the Agricom.  The Junior finals are October 17th at 7pm on the HMV stage below CFCW in West Ed Mall. Come and watch and support the junior finalists.
October 18 and 19th are the youth and open semi finals at 12pm and 4pm same place as the Juniors.... Come out and support your friends performing or just to enjoy the great talent.
'Finals will be at the Myer Howeritz Theatre in UofA on November 2nd at 7pm. This is a ticketed event and you can phone Northlands for info.

Well i just had to start this part over as i forgot to save and i lost all of it about 20 minutes of typing.... hate it when i do that...gurr!

Well the Global Country All Star show was huge this year as it was Maryann's tenth year of putting on the concert. Many performers from the last ten years were there... A special feature was Farmer's Daughter... who hadn't sang together in 8 years... I got their autographs for sure... Yhe concert is going to go in a new direction next year and I'm sure whereever Maryann takes it it will be a success... Jeff Funk wasn't able to be at the concert this year because pf health problems... sure hoping you have bounced back over the summer.... we missed you... He is such a big part of all that goes on in the music industry and a real support of all Maryann does...

In May I also went to Brett Kissel's 18th birthday bash.... That young man is such a talent and once again filled the Winspear and the party was very successful to say the least.... Way to go Brett... His new CD is Awesome! The song Black Eyed Susans he co wrote with Steve Fox is wonderful and should be a single #1 when they release it...hint...hint... It will be soon i hope...

Also in the end of May i had the pleasure of taking a friend of mine (age 60) to his first live concert in a concert hall. He loves Tas Ma Hal so i got tickets and away we went It was so neat to view the show through his eyes and his responses.... Tas always gets everyone up dancing in the asile and even my shy friend got up and danced by his seat... It really renewed for me the effect live music affects people and brings happiness in our souls... he will go to more concerts now i think!! The experience was awesome for him and for me...

I am having a lot of changes going to hapen in my life i have decided to move to a place that has a pool within a few minutes so i can exercise and keep my body mobile... The problem is finding a place with ground level entrance and within my price range (cheap)... But i need to do this for my health and mobility... so if you know of any place let me know... Thanks!

Also by 2010 i won't be volunteering for anything I want to take a break and just be a spectator for awhile And maybe i will run away and go on adventures of my own... I will still house sit occasionaly... This is my last year(2009) to be the lineup coordinator for AWOCM/AMOCM. They are doing a wonderful job of the show (Saturday of Mothers Day Weekend at the Hoadley Community Hall). So who knows i may get bored but we'll have to wait and see if that happens...lol

Also if you are looking for me to pull up in my old brown van it isn't going to happen after the 15th as i have bought a Chartruse Dodge Shadow with a lighter pink racing stripe and baloon decals on the back.... I told a friend "it took me 56 years to get a hippy car"...lol But it gets 40 miles to the galon so i really don't care what color it is...

If anyone has news or events for the web site just email me at dbrandson@hotmail.com  and please put out my website www.diannebrandson.com to all the people on your contact list so they can keep up with the Alberta music events scene.
I also want to say thanks to Bill Borgwardt for his frindship and his beautiful photos he takes at all the events around the province... Subscribe to Canadian Country Music News and you will see his great reports on all that is happening.

So take care and i will add more to this as the fall progresses...

WELCOME TO SUMMER 2008

Well I'd like to congradulate the Hoadley Community Association for putting on a great show....I knew i was on the money when i asked them if they would like to take over the show...  The food was wonderful and the hall decorated western and the artists and the audience were treated like royality...
I did the lineup for them this year and I've been asked to help out in this way for next year as well.

The Bishop Brothers, a duo who are going to be reconed with in the future were first timers on my lineup and the recieved the AMOCM Rising Star Medallions this year.  Also new to the lineup were Pat Hatherly, Joyfull Melody Trio, Randy Hollar, Wayne O., I'm sure they will get asked back again in years to come.

Receiving the AWOCM Lifetime Achievement Award was Carmen Lindsay from Carvel Ab. She had a suprize as Rita McNeil sent her a wonderful Porcelin Angel and a letter of congradulations as Rita had sang the song Carmen wrote "Angels" on her Common Ground CD.

Receiving the AMOCM Lifetime Achievement Award was Randy Hollar from Chipman Ab. He has been performing for many years and his Wilf Carter tribute show is the best there is. He is a top notch yodeler and plays with the Legends of Country Music all over Alberta...

Congradulations to these two fine performers who have shared so much of their lives with audiences all over Alberta and even as far as Mexico in Carmens case. They both have performed in all the Western provinces as well.

Just mark your calendar for the Saturday of Mothers Day weekend for another great show hosted by the Hoadley Community Association next year. I will keep you posted as to the lineup very soon.

Bashaw Festival of Stars was a huge success again and i really enjoyed the day on Saturday... Ron Schantz and his crew did a wonderful job again.... Congrats to them.

Comming up is Pincer Creek Gathering on Fathers Day weekend and Then Willow Creek in the beginning of July, then Stony Plain in August and Maple Creek and Cochrane in September.... A great musical summer to look forward to...

Take care I'll keep you posted with more stuff!!!

Dianne

Just thought I'd include a poem for you:::

Just Thoughts
Life seems to pass so quickly by,
As a person sits and impatiently waits and sighs.
We are a society always on the run,
Sometimes we forget to stop and have some fun.
A cup of coffee at Tim Hortons or a slice of Boston Pizza Pie;
Make time to meet your loved ones, it's important please try.
For quality time together means so much to those you love.
Consider those times a blessing from the Lord above.
And as you sit and visit and share your life's dreams,
You'll realize through conversation you make quite a team.
Whether you've been together for 50 or only two or four;
Or maybe it's your first love come knocking on your hearts door.
Take time to converse and share each inner thought,
It will make your bond even stronger and that is something that can't be bought.
My only advise is don't let life overwhelm you and make you blue...
Make wise choices, make time for yourself and others and always remember God really does love you!!!

Take Care and Gods Blessings on you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Parting words by Max Ehrmann
"Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit."

Stony Plain Cowboy Poetry Association is looking for new directors as some directors have retired. Volunteer's are always needed as well. So if you would like to be either a director or a volunteer please call Jackson MacKenzie 1-780-628-2869 for information.
